This package installs the software support for ThinkVantage Active
Protection System.

Refer to marketing materials to find out what computer models
support Active Protection System.

If this package has been installed, updating (overwrite-installing)
this package will fix problems, add new functions, or expand
functions as noted below.

DETERMINING WHICH VERSION IS INSTALLED

[Windows Vista/XP]
1. Start Windows XP/Vista.
2. For Windows XP/Vista with Classic Start menu, click Start, point
to Settings, and click Control Panel.
Otherwise, click Start, then click Control Panel.
3. Double-click the ThinkVantage Active Protection icon.
4. Click Real-time Status tab on ThinkVantage Active Protection
System Properties.
5. Version information is shown in the Software Version: section.

[Windows 2000]
1. Start Windows 2000.
2. Click Start, point to Settings, and click Control Panel.
3. Double-click the ThinkVantage Active Protection icon.
4. Click Real-time Status tab on ThinkVantage Active Protection
System Properties.
5. Version information is shown in the Software Version: section.

NOTES

*1: Note for ThinkPad X40
The BIOS, version 1.13 (1UET62WW) or higher, and Embedded
Controller Program, version 1.12 (1UHT58WW) or higher, are
required to enable ThinkVantage Active Protection System.
Update BIOS and Embedded Controller Program if necessary.
For more detail, refer to release notes of BIOS and Embedded
Controller Program.

INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS

Notes:
- If your computer runs satisfactorily now, it may not be necessary to
update the software. To determine if you should update the software,
refer to the Version Information section.
- If you have ThinkVantage Productivity Center installed on your
system, update your Productivity Center to version 2.00 (or later)
prior to install ThinkVantage Active Protection System.


Manual Install

1. Start Windows and logon with administrative privileges.
2. Double-click the driver package to extract it onto the hard drive.
The default extraction path is C:\DRIVERS\WIN\HPROTECT.
3. For Windows XP, 2000, click Start, then click Run.
For Windows Vista 32-bit, click Start, select All Programs,
select Accessories, then click Run.
4. Specify SETUP.EXE with the full path name where you extracted the
package in the step 2, and click OK.
Example: C:\DRIVERS\WIN\HPROTECT\SETUP.EXE
5. Click Next.
6. Click Next.
7. Click Finish and restart the system.


Unattended Install

This is for system administrators' use only.

1. Start Windows and logon with administrative privileges.
2. Double-click the driver package to extract it onto the hard drive.
The default extraction path is C:\DRIVERS\WIN\HPROTECT.
3. For Windows XP, 2000, click Start, then click Run.
For Windows Vista 32-bit, click Start, select All Programs,
select Accessories, then click Run.
4. Specify SETUP.EXE -s -v"/qn REBOOT=ReallySuppress" with the full
path name where you extracted the package in the step 2, and
click OK.
Example:
C:\DRIVERS\WIN\HPROTECT\SETUP.EXE -s -v"/qn REBOOT=ReallySuppress"

UNINSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS


Manual Uninstall

[Windows Vista]
1. Start Windows and logon with administrative privileges.
2. Click Start, click Control Panel then click Programs.
3. Under Programs and Features, click Uninstall a program.
4. Right-click ThinkVantage Active Protection System, (a previous
version of this software may be listed as IBM Active Protection
System) and select Uninstall.
5. Click Continue.
6. Follow the instructions on the screen.

[Windows XP, 2000]
1. Start Windows and logon with administrative privileges.
2. Click Start, select Settings, then click Control Panel.
3. Double-click Add/Remove Programs.
4. Select ThinkVantage Active Protection System. (A previous version
of this software may be listed as IBM Active Protection System)
5. Click Change/Remove.
6. Click OK.
7. Click Finish.
8. Restart the system.
